Develop ethical reasoning skills for Middle Schoolers (!) by reflecting on moral quandaries in an immersive fictional universe
Originally funded in 2012, Quandary is a free, award‑winning digital game that invites students to step into the role of captain of a futuristic colony on the planet Braxos, where every decision shapes the community’s future. Designed for ages 8 and up, it challenges players to weigh ethical dilemmas, distinguish facts from opinions, and consider multiple perspectives before making choices that have real consequences in the game world.
In the classroom, Quandary becomes a powerful tool for building critical thinking, empathy, and social‑emotional skills, wrapped in a story‑rich, scenario‑based experience that makes moral reasoning feel engaging rather than abstract.
Lately, the game got awarded a Tools Competition grant to allow students to put in practice and reflect on what they have learnt in the game with an interactive chatbot.
In-class deployments of the Quandary ethical decision-making game typically follow up the exercise with a group reflection. With group reflection, learners’ individual takeaways are oftentimes unknown to the instructor and little time is available for each participant to do the reflection individually.

A series of chatbots that know the decisions a student made in the game and guide the learner along a reflection on their specific game choices and how the game’s lessons could be extrapolated to real-world choices related to ethics in their lives.

“I enjoyed the dialogue very much. The character was encouraging and struck a nice balance between validating what I said and pushing me for a more specific response.” - A student after the testing session
